[ She raises her eyebrows. ]

[What does that even mean?

He stares at Ino, obviously somewhat freaked out, and then he just kinda... slumps and shoves his face in his arms.]

Yes...

[Sure is Sesame Street up in here.]

[ino]

[ There we go. ]

I had a feeling. That's why I came to talk to you about it.

[arcanepower]

[He continues to hide his face in his big sleeves. He's glad for them right now.]

What do I do? I never meant for this to happen! We're both so busy with studies, it's not like I know how to cultivate romance. The thought didn't even occur to me. Maybe when I'm a hundred, but now?

[He drags his hands down his face, then goes back to hiding his face in his hands.]

Oh, Light. This is so wrong. He'll probably think I am disgusting.

[ino]

[ She just watches this with mild amusement, chin resting in her palm. ]

It's not wrong to feel that way. And I know he's not going to think that at all.

[It's not that he thinks being gay or bi is bad. It's a simpler matter here.]

B-but I'm three times his age!

[ino]

Yeah, but you're an elf?

[ She's pretty sure mentally they're on the same level, anyways. ]

[arcanepower]

Y... yes. But he might find it weird. What if he finds it weird?

[He runs his hands through his hair, making it messier, and then tugs on it.]

What if he finds out I like him and he only wants to be friends? What if he leaves? I'll have to live with my shame for three hundred years! [He groans in that melodramatic way only a panicking teenager can.]

[ino]

[ Three hundred ... She tries not to laugh. ]

Hey, don't worry so much! I think if you decide to talk to him about it -- it will turn out a lot better than you're thinking.

[ She'll conveniently ignore the "leaving" thing, because ... well, it's a possibility that she doesn't want to have to address for them until she has to ]

He lets go of his hair and looks down at his hands again. Ino is being so gentle and supportive, but he's still scared as hell.]

You and Tadashi are so comfortable with each other. You've probably never been this scared over something stupid before.

[ino]

[ Okay, she does laugh a little at that. ]

Of course I have been, plenty of times. [ She never really doubted he liked her, but there were plenty of other issues to be worried about. ] But the most important thing is that we care about each other. As long as I think about that, I'm not really scared anymore.

[arcanepower]

Really? I can't imagine you being scared of anything. You're always so confident, but I've spent most of my life running away.

[He sighs again.]

Hiro tells me that he cares all the time. But I don't know if... I'm ready to try just yet.

[ino]

Everyone gets scared sometimes. Even the strongest and most confident people.

[ She smiles ]

I'm not saying that you have to do any one thing in particular. I just want you to think about this, okay? I know for a fact that Hiro cares about you very much. And I think he would be happy to hear it if you wanted to tell him how you feel.

[arcanepower]

I'll take your word for it.

[He twirls a bit of his hair around his finger. It's getting long again; he needs to cut it.]

Okay. I... I will think about it, I promise. [He can't get Hiro off his mind lately anyway.]

[ino]

Good!

[ Looking pleased with herself, she finally takes one of the dango sticks out of the box for herself to nibble on ]

I'm glad.

[He is thinking about it right now. He probably shouldn't, because then things just fall out of his mouth. For now though, he's... okay.]

... These dango are really very good.

[He can probably stick three of them in his mouth at once. Sticks and all. He's considering trying.]

[ Yes ... let's keep the food in the mouth. ]

Sometime I'll have to try and make some other flavors, then ... The kind with red bean and green tea flavoring is pretty popular where I come from, too.

Hey, kiddo. If you've reading this, it's because I've disappeared again. So, first of all: sorry about that. It can't be helped either way, right? There are so many things in this world--these worlds--that we have no control over. It's daunting, to say the least. But here's one thing that's true: you're my son, and I love you. No matter where you are. No matter where I am.

I gave you a pendant with my family's crest, or I should have done. Hopefully I did. My mind isn't the sharp tack it used to be. In any case, it's not just for sentiment. Keep it on you. When we meet again--because we WILL, this I know for a certainty--show it to me. If the man you find already knows you, so much the better. If he doesn't, he will, immediately. Foolproof, eh? You can thank me later. WHEN we see each other again.

Meantime, take care of yourself. Take care of that boy you like, too. Maybe he can come see us some day, back home. Stranger things, right?

[There's a knock on the doorframe of wherever Belth may be at the moment, and Finrod sticks his head into the room a moment later.]

Belthazar? Do you have a moment?

[Honestly, Finrod isn't looking too good himself; he seems worn, and that inner light he carries around with him seems a little dimmed, somehow. But his voice, at least, is still the same- melodic, calm, and even-keeled.]

[Belth is sitting crosslegged on his bed, a book of magic splayed on the blankets before him.]

Finrod? Come in.

[There is no trace of the enthusiasm he usually has, especially when greeting old friends. He may not be close to Finrod, but there is a sort of brotherhood there, a kinship; even elves from different planets have struggles that can be called similar.]

Is... is this about Syeira?

[Among the Eldar, it is said that all elves are kin, and it's something that Finrod believes deeply, feels down in his bones. It's one reason among many that he's here. He feels he has a responsibility- as his (former) captain, as his elder, as an elf- to look in on Belth after what's happened, knowing how he's been affected.]

It is. [He sits down on the edge of the bed, sparing a glance at the book.] I thought... [He runs a hand through his hair.] She would want her friends to take care of one another.

[He gently shuts the arcane tome, takes in a breath.]

She would. You have both been good to me, and I-- I have always felt... [He rummages inside himself for the word.] ... inadequate. And now she is gone and I cannot tell her that she--

[He ducks his head, trying to bite back the tears.]

There is nothing to forgive. [He wants to reach out and embrace the boy, but holds back, not knowing if it would be welcomed. Instead, he settles for placing his hand on Belth's shoulder.] Weep, if you feel the need; I have.
